EU Lagging Behind US, China in AI Investment: Huang Renxun

According to Reuters, on October 23rd local time, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated in Copenhagen, Denmark, that the European Union (EU) is significantly lagging behind the United States and China in terms of investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and must accelerate the development of AI, as every country recognizes data as a national resource.

Huang unveiled a new supercomputer named Gefion in Copenhagen. This supercomputer, equipped with 1528 GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), was developed in collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Danish Export and Investment Fund. It is intended for use in drug development, disease diagnosis, treatment, and complex life science challenges.

Huang said, "The era of computer-aided drug development will definitely arrive within a decade, and this will be the decade of digital biology."

He also mentioned that the EU is far behind the US and China in AI investment. "The EU must accelerate the development of artificial intelligence, as every country realizes that data is a national resource," Huang said.

In June of this year, Huang showcased the Blackwell chip in Taipei, Reuters reported.

The day before, at the Gartner IT Expo in Orlando, USA, Huang stated that Nvidia is applying artificial intelligence to chip design, software writing, and managing supply chains. He also called on the professionals present that their companies must transform into AI-driven organizations to prepare for the "new industrial revolution."

Although there are only a few AI companies in Europe, such as France's Mistral and Germany's Aleph Alpha, the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, which came into effect on August 1st this year, is the world's first comprehensive regulation of AI, marking an important step for the EU in regulating AI applications.

On September 10th, the European Commission announced the official tender for the establishment of an AI factory, aiming to enhance the EU's global competitiveness in the field of AI through the AI factory.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe must strive to become a global leader in the field of AI innovation, and the AI factory will help ensure that Europe remains at the forefront in the transformative technology field of AI.In recent years, with the rapid development of global artificial intelligence, every move of Jensen Huang has attracted particular attention from the media. Currently, NVIDIA's market value has reached 3.52 trillion US dollars, making it the world's second-largest publicly traded company after Apple.

In May last year, when discussing the United States' restrictions on semiconductor exports to China, he warned not to underestimate the catching-up capabilities of Chinese companies, with a large number of domestic Chinese GPU startups emerging. He emphasized that NVIDIA would comply with the export control regulations of the U.S. government, but he believes that China will use this opportunity to cultivate local entrepreneurs to deal with tensions with the United States.

In a subsequent interview with the British Financial Times, he again mentioned the semiconductor export controls to China. He warned that the chip war instigated by the United States has severely constrained its domestic semiconductor companies, which could instead cause "great damage" to its own technology industry. He described the related bans as having NVIDIA's "hands tied behind its back."
